Darío Euraque’s “The Threat of Blackness to the Mestizo Nation: Race and Ethnicity in the Honduran Banana Economy, 1920S and 1930S”

Euraque (Euraque_2003) argues that Garifunas (to a greater extent than West Indian blacks working in the banana plantations) were perceived as a “threat” by the Honduran elites because they owned coastal land sought after by the expanding banana industry.  These elites who wanted to promote a mestizo national identity introduced the Lempira national currency as a way to highlight Honduran Indian heritage. Honduran mestizaje did not include blacks according to this discourse.  The article  mentions various openly racist historical figures (including dictator Carías Andino and the well known author Froylan Turcios) and laws against blacks enacted in the 1920s and 30s by both National and Liberal administrations.
